Disney Film Society Rating System

Celebrating the Movies. Exploring the History. Discovering the Magic.

Every film has a story beyond whether it is simply good or bad. Some movies are outstanding entertainment but have relatively little historical significance. Others have made important contributions to filmmaking, even if they are not especially entertaining to modern audiences.

At Disney Film Society, we believe that appreciating a movie means looking beyond a single rating.

That's why the Disney Film Society Rating System evaluates films from three distinct perspectives: Overall Rating, Disney Legacy, and Disney Film Society Recommendation.

Together, these measurements provide a more complete understanding of a film's artistic achievements, historical importance, and value to different audiences.

Our rating system applies to films across the Disney family of studios, including Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, and historical labels such as Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures.

Films from studios later acquired by Disney are evaluated within their original historical and production contexts.

No single rating tells the entire story of a film, and that is exactly the point.

1. OVERALL RATING

How well does the movie work as a film?

The Overall Rating represents Disney Film Society's assessment of the film's storytelling, performances, direction, technical achievements, and entertainment value.

Rather than relying entirely on a general impression, each review considers six evaluation categories.

Overall Rating Categories

1. Story & Concept

How creative, engaging, coherent, and effectively told is the film's story?

Outstanding / Strong / Good / Weak / Poor

2. Performances / Voice Performances

How effectively do the actors or voice performers bring their characters to life? We consider characterization, emotional authenticity, chemistry, and the overall quality of the performances.

Outstanding / Strong / Good / Weak / Poor

3. Direction

How effectively does the director communicate the film's creative vision through storytelling, pace, and overall execution?

Outstanding / Strong / Good / Weak / Poor

4. Music & Sound

How effectively do the musical score, songs when applicable, sound design, and audio presentation contribute to the film?

Outstanding / Strong / Good / Weak / Poor

5. Visual Artistry

How successfully does the film use animation, cinematography, production design, visual effects, lighting, and other visual techniques to support its storytelling?

6. Rewatchability

How much does the film encourage or reward repeat viewings through its entertainment value, emotional impact, memorable moments, artistic achievements, or storytelling depth?

Endlessly Rewatchable / Highly Rewatchable / Occasionally Rewatchable / Rarely Rewatchable / One Viewing Is Enough

Overall Rating Scale

Each film receives an Overall Rating from one to five stars, accompanied by a numerical score out of 100.

The numerical score provides a more precise assessment, while the corresponding star rating offers an easily understood summary.

Numerical Score Star Rating Classification
90–100 ★★★★★ Outstanding
75–89 ★★★★☆ Very Good
60–74 ★★★☆☆ Good
40–59 ★★☆☆☆ Below Average
0–39 ★☆☆☆☆ Poor

The six evaluation categories guide the reviewer's assessment. They are not automatically averaged or assigned equal numerical weight. The final score reflects the film's overall artistic and entertainment achievement, with consideration given to its genre, original release period, and creative intentions.

The Overall Rating is an independent editorial assessment. A movie's commercial success, historical significance, or popularity does not automatically determine its score.

2. DISNEY LEGACY

How important or influential is the film in the studio and cinematic history?

The Disney Legacy Rating measures a film's historical importance, creative influence, cultural impact, and lasting contribution to filmmaking.

Unlike the Overall Rating, which evaluates the movie itself, Disney Legacy considers the significance of the film within its original studio, the history of The Walt Disney Company and its affiliated studios, and the broader motion picture industry.

A film does not have to be a personal favorite, a box office success, or critically acclaimed upon its initial release to earn a high Disney Legacy Rating.

Disney Legacy Rating Scale

★★★★★ - Landmark

A defining film that transformed its studio, advanced the art of filmmaking, established an important cinematic milestone, or left an extraordinary and enduring cultural legacy. Its influence continues to be recognized today.

★★★★☆ - Significant

A highly important film that made meaningful contributions through artistic achievement, innovation, popularity, cultural influence, or its impact on the development of a studio or franchise.

★★★☆☆ - Notable

A film with a meaningful place in cinematic or studio history. Although it may not have been groundbreaking, it made recognizable contributions to its studio, genre, audience, or the broader film history.

★★☆☆☆ - Limited Impact

A film with some historical, artistic, or cultural significance, but relatively little demonstrated long-term influence on its studio or the broader motion picture industry.

★☆☆☆☆ - Minor Legacy

A film whose documented historical, creative, or cultural influence remains minimal beyond its original release. It may still be entertaining, appreciated by fans, or worthy of rediscovery.

How We Determine Disney Legacy

When evaluating a film's legacy, Disney Film Society considers six factors.

⏺  Historical Importance: Did the film represent a significant milestone in the development of its studio, genre, franchise, or the motion picture industry?

⏺  Innovation: Did the production introduce or advance filmmaking techniques, animation methods, technology, visual storytelling, or creative approaches?

⏺  Cultural Impact: Did the film influence popular culture, inspire other creative works, or leave a lasting impression on audiences?

⏺  Studio Influence: Did the film help shape its studio's creative direction, business decisions, future productions, or long-term identity?

⏺  Recognition: Has the film received meaningful awards, critical recognition, historical preservation, or acknowledgement of its lasting artistic or cultural significance?

⏺  Enduring Relevance: Does the film continue to influence filmmaking, generate meaningful discussion, attract new audiences, or maintain an identifiable place in cinema history?

No single factor automatically determines a film's Disney Legacy Rating. Each film is evaluated within its historical context, with consideration given to its original release, subsequent influence, and lasting significance.

Disney Legacy measures historical significance, not necessarily entertainment value, commercial success, or personal enjoyment.

3. DISNEY FILM SOCIETY RECOMMENDATION

Who should watch the movie?

The Disney Film Society Recommendation answers a different question from either the Overall Rating or Disney Legacy.

Instead of simply determining whether a film is good or bad, this classification identifies the audience most likely to appreciate it.

Some films deserve widespread recommendation because of their quality, historical importance, or overall viewing experience. Others may appeal primarily to enthusiasts of a particular genre, filmmaker, franchise, or period in cinema history.

Recommendation Categories

🏆 Essential Viewing - Everyone

A film of exceptional quality, historical importance, or lasting appeal that deserves a place on a movie enthusiast's watchlist. Strongly recommended as an essential cinematic experience.

🎥 Highly Recommended - Most Viewers

A particularly strong film that offers a rewarding viewing experience and is likely to appeal to a broad audience. A confident recommendation for most viewers interested in its subject or genre.

🍿 Recommended - Interested Viewers

A worthwhile film that offers enjoyable or meaningful entertainment, particularly for those interested in its story, genre, characters, filmmakers, or historical period.

📚 For Dedicated Fans - Enthusiasts

Best suited for dedicated followers of a particular studio, franchise, genre, filmmaker, or era. While it may have limited mainstream appeal, it offers something worthwhile for viewers with a special interest in its subject.

🎓 For Completists & Historians - Specialized Audiences

Primarily recommended to film historians, collectors, researchers, and viewers exploring a studio's complete filmography. Its greatest value may come from historical curiosity, archival interest, or understanding a particular chapter in cinematic history.

How Recommendations are Determined

The Disney Film Society Recommendation considers the Overall Rating and Disney Legacy Rating, but it is not calculated directly from either score.

A film with a moderate Overall Rating may still qualify as Essential Viewing because of its historical significance.

Likewise, an entertaining film with a relatively modest historical legacy might receive a Highly Recommended classification based on the viewing experience alone.

Our goal is to help readers decide which movies deserve their attention and why.

4. UNDERSTANDING THE RATINGS

To illustrate how the system works, consider a hypothetical film that receives the following assessment:

Overall Rating: ★★★☆☆ - 72/100 (Good)

Disney Legacy: ★★★★★ - Landmark

Disney Film Society Recommendation: 🏆 Essential Viewing

This combination indicates that the movie has noticeable artistic or entertainment shortcomings, but its extraordinary historical significance makes it an essential film to experience.

Conversely, a film might receive an outstanding Overall Rating, a relatively modest Disney Legacy Rating, and a Highly Recommended classification.

Neither result is contradictory. Each rating measures something different.

THE FINAL WORD

At Disney Film Society, we believe movies deserve to be appreciated for more than a single number or star rating.

A film's artistic achievements, historical importance, cultural influence, and ability to entertain are all part of its story.

By examining these qualities separately, the Disney Film Society Rating System provides readers with a more complete perspective on the movies we celebrate, revisit, and discover.

Whether exploring the groundbreaking animated features of Walt Disney, the creative achievements of Pixar, the blockbuster franchises of Marvel and Lucasfilm, or the diverse cinematic histories of 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, and Disney's other film labels, our goal remains the same:

Celebrating the Movies. Exploring the History. Discovering the Magic.
