Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs | From the Disney Vault

In the history of motion pictures, certain films do more than entertain audiences. They challenge expectations, redefine artistic possibilities, and change the direction of an entire industry. Few films have accomplished all three as decisively as Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).

When the film premiered in Hollywood on December 21, 1937, Walt Disney was taking the greatest creative and financial gamble of his career. At a time when animated cartoons were primarily associated with short subjects shown before feature films, Disney believed animation could sustain a complete theatrical story filled with humor, drama, music, suspense, and genuine emotion.

Disney’s Live-Action Moana Sets Disney+ Streaming Debut for October 21

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana is officially headed to Disney+, with the film scheduled to begin streaming on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Directed by Thomas Kail, the film stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, a character he originally voiced in Disney’s 2016 animated feature. The streaming release comes just over three months after the film’s July 10 theatrical debut, giving audiences another opportunity to experience the live-action reimagining of one of Disney’s most popular modern animated films.

Despite the enduring popularity of the original Moana, the live-action adaptation struggled to achieve comparable success at the box office, earning approximately $323 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Its arrival on Disney+ offers the film a chance to reach a broader audience, particularly families familiar with the animated original. With Moana remaining one of Disney’s most recognizable contemporary franchises, the streaming debut represents another chapter in the studio’s ongoing efforts to bring its animated classics to life through live-action filmmaking.

Welcome to Disney Film Society!

Welcome to Disney Film Society, a place where our passion for movies meets our fascination with the history, creativity, and people behind them.

For nearly a century, The Walt Disney Company and the studios that have become part of its family have helped shape the world of motion pictures. From Walt Disney’s groundbreaking animated classics and unforgettable live-action adventures to Pixar’s imaginative storytelling, Marvel’s superheroes, the galaxies of Star Wars, and the diverse films of 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures, there is an extraordinary cinematic history waiting to be explored.

At Disney Film Society, we believe that every movie has a story worth telling—not just the one audiences see on screen, but the remarkable stories of how these films were developed, produced, released, and remembered.
Our goal is simple: to celebrate the movies, explore their history, and share our appreciation for the art of filmmaking.
